From pellets to scoops: a cool packaging collaboration in South Africa
Ice cream asks a lot from its packaging. A container needs to look appealing, perform reliably at deep-freeze temperatures and protect what everyone really cares about: the ice cream inside.
In South Africa, we have been working together with our distributor partner Chemimpo South Africa and Classic Injection Mouldings (Pty) Ltd (CIM), a local manufacturer of high-speed, in-mold labelled packaging, to bring these requirements together in an ice cream packaging application using our SH950MO polypropylene grade.
The collaboration builds on the close relationship Chemimpo has developed with customers in the region, helping connect our material expertise with local market needs and manufacturing know-how.
A collaboration with a delicious result
The journey from polymer pellets to a finished ice cream container takes more than simply choosing the right material. It requires close cooperation and an understanding of what the packaging producer needs, both during manufacturing and when the finished pack enters the cold chain.
By bringing together our polymer expertise, Chemimpo’s local market knowledge and CIM’s injection molding capabilities, we were able to support an application that combines the performance required for ice cream packaging with an attractive finished pack.
SH950MO is particularly well suited to this kind of job. Put simply, it combines excellent transparency with the toughness needed at deep-freeze temperatures. This helps create packaging that offers a clear view of the delicious product inside while remaining robust in the demanding conditions of the freezer. Its processing characteristics also make it well suited to the efficient production of thin-wall packaging.
And when it comes to ice cream, transparency can make a real difference. Seeing the colors, swirls and indulgent ingredients inside can create that all-important moment of anticipation before the lid is even opened.
