Borouge International accelerates the energy transformation with advanced HVDC insulation system materials

The energy transformation requires a significant increase in power transmission infrastructure to connect renewable energy sources such as offshore wind farms and support electrification. This includes both grid expansion and higher-capacity cable systems that deliver cost-efficient and reliable transmission. High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology plays a central role, enabling efficient long-distance transmission with minimal losses.

Enabling higher-capacity HVDC transmission

To support these requirements, Borealis GmbH, which is wholly owned by Borouge Group International AG (Borouge International), is advancing its Borlink™ technology platform with the introduction of Borlink LE0650DC, a new semiconductive compound that enables HVDC cable systems to operate at conductor temperatures of up to 90°C.

Operating at higher temperatures allows increased current carrying capacity and higher power transmission capability, supporting more efficient long-distance electricity transmission.

Driving performance through Borlink LE0650DC

The performance of Borlink LE0650DC in combination with Borlink LS4258DC insulation materials has been demonstrated through extensive qualification tests including type tests and prequalification tests in line with applicable international standards such as CIGRE TB 852. Testing was carried out with leading cable system manufacturers at voltage levels up to 525 kV.

These validations confirm the robustness and reliability of the insulation system under demanding electrical and thermal conditions, for both subsea and land HVDC cable applications.

In addition to enabling high-temperature HVDC system operation, Borlink LE0650DC provides further benefits for cable manufacturers and system operators. Its improved processing performance complements the proven processing performance of Borlink LS4258DC, supporting more efficient manufacturing and enabling longer cable production lengths. These longer lengths reduce the number of factory joints, improving system performance.

Expanding capacity to support global HVDC demand

Borlink LE0650DC is produced on a dedicated production asset, adding significant additional capacity to Borouge International’s existing HVDC material production.

By further increasing the availability of high-performance HVDC materials and strengthening security of supply, Borouge International is enabling the execution of critical power infrastructure projects.

Built on a strong HVDC legacy

Borealis GmbH has played a pioneering role in the development of extruded HVDC cable insulation based on cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE).

Decades of innovation and collaboration with leading cable manufacturers have made the company’s Borlink technology platform a reference for HVDC transmission systems. Today, more than 12,000 km of cables using Borlink technology are in service worldwide, demonstrating its long-term performance and reliability.

“This step reflects our commitment to the cable industry and proven track record in extruded HVDC cable insulation” says Bart Verheule, Vice President Marketing Energy, Borealis Polymers NV. “Guided by our legacy and committed to the future, we are ensuring a reliable supply of high performance Borlink™ materials that support the expansion of HVDC transmission infrastructure and accelerate the global energy transformation.”
